Audacity not recording?

Hello, I am experiencing an issue and it's something that I'd like to resolve as soon as possible. Audacity is not recording my voice when I attempt to create a recording. (Need to make voice recordings for a class) I bought a headset and began to use it...the first several recordings were fine, but then Audacity stopped "recognizing" my headset. At first I thought it was an issue with the headset to I bought another. Once again, the first recording worked but after that Audacity stopped recognizing the headset. In my computer's control panel, I can clearly see the headset is connected and working, the computer recognizes the Audio out and mic in and both work when I test them. However, in Audacity, it does not "pick up" my voice when I speak. The recording comes out blank, as if I weren;t speaking at all.
And no, the microphone is not muted and all volume settings are where they should be.

I bought a headset
We live on lush, abundant information. Who made the headset? USB? Analog? Part numbers? Which Windows ? What kind of computer? Are you actually on Audacity 1.3?

Sorry for the rushed message. The first headset I used was an analog headset with the two pins made by GE. The one I'm using now is USB made by Dynex. I am currently on a desktop I built myself over the summer. When I connect the USB headset to the computer, I go into the Windows control panel and can see that Windows recognizes both the audio out and mic in. I have tested the microphone with Skype to verify that it works. It seems that the problem is isolated to Audacity.
I'm running Windows 7, and I have the 1.3 Beta version of Audacity.

You can go into Audacity Preferences > Devices and see what Audacity thinks it's supposed to be connected to. Do you like to plug and unplug USB devices? Windows has an odd relationship with USB. If you plug in a USB sound device,Windows naturally assumes it's priority and bi-directional -- which in the case of the headset, it is. If you plug and unplug USB speakers after the headset, goodness knows what the computer thinks.
Does this fail right after using Skype, by any chance? Think back. Skype viciously reassigns sound pathways while it's working and it doesn't much matter what you want. It tries to put everything back when it's done, but it doesn't always work out correctly.
