I have a presonus 2x2 USB device that allows 2 inputs. In other software, I can record 2 tracks simultaneously via 2 mics. I was wondering is I can do the same with the newest Audacity (and how to set it up to do that).

I understand how to record multiple tracks one at a time overdubbing, but am looking to record 2 tracks at the same time (2-mono tracks would be fine using 2 separate input (mics).

At first pass it seems the box does not allow you to fade one mic to the left and the other to the right as a stereo show like larger mixers do. I don't think the box will deliver two different sound channels-- or lat least not that Audacity can deal with.

If there is custom software that came with the box, you may need to use that to capture the dual microphones. Many products can create a multi-channel stream, but Audacity can't manage most of them.

Yes, so far the Studio one (Presonus' product) as well as Reaper work. I've not tried others yet. I just got used to Audacity so I was trying to use it. Not sure if the ASIO drivers are what enables the other products to work with the multi-channel input and Audacity doesn't use it's ASIO drivers? In any case, I have Reaper so maybe ill just get used to it.

Studio one (from the mfg Presonus) and Reaper are the other two I've tried that work. I've just used Audacity for awhile so thought if it would work I wouldn't need to learn another product.

Audacity doesn't have ASIO drivers. You can force it to have ASIO services by recompiling the program...

If you set Audacity to record "2 channels (stereo)" using the Device Toolbar, then channel 1 of the Presonus will record on the left (upper) channel of the stereo pair and channel 2 will record onto the right (lower) channel.
After recording, click on the track name and from the drop down menu select "Split Stereo to Mono".
You will then have two independent audio tracks, one for each channel of the Presonus.
