I believe I was in the middle of recording a radio broadcast and after I had restarted the recording after a commercial break, it was in a new format which looked very different. It had a gray area above and below the white area where the recording was taking place. Prior to that I had always had the entire area within a track as white. I don't know if that hurts anything or not, it still seems to work, but I can't figure out how to get it back to the way it was.
Separately, I just recorded another interview on the radio and it seemed to be going fine, but when it got to a commercial break the recording changed drastically, maxing out all of the available space on the track top to bottom. It didn't sound to me as if the volume on the broadcast had changed much, if at all. I hadn't noticed it, until I switched screens and saw the recording.
{edit: The gray border areas didn't seem to be a "hard" border. The sound graph didn't appear to clip at the border, but the line went above that border at times.}
Any idea what might be happening? Thank you.
I'll attach a screenshot which should show the white & gray areas, and also the big change at the commercial break.

You enabled Multi-Tool:

That is remembered if you exit Audacity with it enabled. Just press F1 on your keyboard to go back to Selection Tool.
