How do you enhance the audio by making it louder

I'm having trouble editing my original Mp3 audio in Audacity by increasing the overall volume. Is there a way you can make it louder than the original mp3 file it was imported from?

Select the audio and use
Effect > Amplify

Just be aware that you will get further MP3 compression damage when you re-export an MP3 file from Audacity. See this aricle in the Wiki:
