Difficulty to adjust recording level

I have recently purchased an USB Turntable -- "DJ-Tech Vinyl USB 10" which is connected
to my HP Pavillon running 64-bit Windows 7. Everything works fine except that I can only
find one means of adjusting the recording level, and that is with the slider control in the
Audicity mixer toolbar. Unfortunately, the slider must be set almost to zero in order not
to exceed the recommended -6 dB level. Normally one would expect to be able to set an
approximate level somewhere else so the slider can be used around it´s center position.
The input is set up as a 2-channel stereo microphone in the devices toolbar.
Have I missed something?

Yes. You should not be using any analog connections at all. If you connect the USB from the turntable to the computer, it should show up in the Audacity drop-down menus. You can select it there. There are no volume controls with this service.

If it doesn't arrive, you should go into Windows Control Panels > Sound > Recording and see if the USB "device" is available there. It could be called anything. My USB microphone appears as a nonsense number -- probably the chipset manufacturer.

The turntable is connected to an USB-port of course. The "microphone" appears as
"Microphone(2-USB Audio CODEC)" in the devices drop down menu.

Some USB TTs have a hardware gain (volume) control - be aware that these are not always mounted in an obvious place (my old ION iTT-USB had one underneath at the back!)

I can't see one on your TT from looking at the piccies on the manufacturer's site on t'interweb - but have a good look at the deck and the manual.

The "DJ-Tech Vinyl USB 10" doesn't have a vlume control. I will certainly look for one next time I by a
TT (if ever). Actually, it seems reasonable to use the maximum range (without clipping) of digital audio
from the TT (to get the best S/N ratio) but this requires some better means to reduce the level inside
the computer. It should be fairly easy to right-shift each sample in the digital representation somewhere
in the processing. Anyhow, thank you for your effort to help me with this.
