input isn't responding

I'm new at recording ANYTHING on my computer...I have just begun going thru the tutorials on how to make a test recording with Audacity beta, and all was well until trying to actually start recording...I hit the record button, but just get the 30 second test beep from the Generate>tone part of the "selecting input" tutorial. I'm using a USB microphone, and as far as I can tell everything has been set up exactly as the tutorial instructed. The mic is on and I hit the record button, but no recording is happening...just the test tone. I know the mic works, as I tested it first thing. The waveform displays are on, but no waves are showing. Any ideas?

I'm using a USB microphone
Which one? Model numbers?
I know the mic works, as I tested it first thing.
How?
Right-click on the right-hand sound meters (the red ones) and select Start Monitoring. They will wake up and bounce in time to your voice without sending Audacity into formal record.
Then make sure the recording drop-down menus are pointing to your sound device -- sometimes only "USB Sound Device" instead of a manufacturer's name.
Which Audacity exactly -- all three numbers like 1.3.13. Which Windows?

Thanks for the reply...The mic is a Logitech (no model number available) desktop. The Audacity program is 1.314-beta Unicode, and my op system is Windows XP. I tested the mic before setting up Audacity, and it works fine...
My choices in the drop-down menu for recording devices are:
Microsoft sound mapper
AK 5370
SB Audigy 4 [DCCO] midi synth
'''''''' What U Hear
S/PDIF-IN
Analog mix /line/cd/aux/tad/pc
microphone
wave............I have selected "Microphone".
I did select "start Monitoring" from the right-hand sound meters, but nothing happens. Then, if I try hitting the record button, the wave display appears, but doesn't show any activity.
Your help is appreciated!
A.

Probably the same no-model-number microphone I have. Mine only works if you set Audacity for Mono, not stereo in preferences. 44100, 16-bit.

I just tried switching the sound device to AK5370, out of curiosity, and now it works! Whodathunkit? Thanks for your help, Koz! I will probably have more questions later..........A.
