Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Newbie needs help!!!

Post by ndodson79605 » Thu Jan 12, 2012 9:30 pm

I have Audacity 1.3.14. Okay, here is my dilemma. I import a beat sample made with DubTurbo2.0. The sample is only a few seconds long and I'm trying to copy and paste it to make it a full track. However, when I paste it on the timeline (waveform I think it's called), and it reaches the pasted track, it rushes into it. So what happens is that the first few seconds plays smoothly, and then when it gets to the pasted parts, it seems to speed up for a split second. I've tried adding silence in between, but when I do, it makes some light clicking sounds. I've even exported a short clip made up of a few pasted audio clips, but when I play it through my media player (WindowsMP), it still makes that click sound. How do I copy and paste these beat samples together into one smooth track? I know this is probably a retarded question, but I need help!!! I can't make a hip-hop track with a bunch of unwanted clicking noises. A fast response would be appreciated! Thanks for any help.

Is it an MP3? Step One. Never do production in MP3. See if you can save the sample as a WAV or AIFF.

The timing problem should go away when you do that.

Then, before you copy, apply Normalize > Remove DC Level.

Magnify the two ends of the sample and make sure the two ends start and stop at the right times. Trim if needed. The up and down motion of the waves has to either be zero, or going the right way after you edit.

The top one is going to click. The bottom one not.

Actually, all samples created by DT2.0 are exported in 44.1 .wav format. I will check out that link though. If I still have problems, I will let you know.

Okay, the timing issue has been fixed. I just pasted the copied track a couple of seconds after the original ended. I magnified the track and made sure it was on zero and then normalized. However, I still get the click sound. Not as bad, but still there. When I removed the Negative DC, was I supposed to set it at 0 db? Because the default choice is -0.1. Maybe that is my problem? Again, any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

Normalize has an unfortunate collection of tools. Only use the tool that removes DC, not the one that tries to set sound levels. The latest Audacity has addressed that problem, but the older ones didn't.

This is what we're trying to fix.

Almost any deviation from center zero will cause a click or pop and it will happen at each edit. I used an extreme example for the graphic to get the point across. If you actually tried to listen to that example, it might damage your speakers.

How long is the segment to be looped? Can you post it here? See attach instructions below this text window.
