This question may have been asked many times, but I can't remember how to record sounds coming from the computer. I did once before on the same computer but i reformatted my computer a couple months ago. I have found the stereo mix and everything easily yet im not sure if I have my inputs and outputs right on Audacity or what.

No, but we do need a clear picture of what equipment you are using and what you are doing and what the problem is.

What exactly is the problem? We know that it's "not working" but what part are you having trouble with? waxcylinder sent you a link to the instructions - where are you getting stuck?

Lets see... Step One, found the stereo mix in my recordings part of the control panel, I have it as the default with all other devices turned off and I have it set in the recording slot on audacity. On Audacity it is titled Stereo Mix Realtek Definition High Audio. Im not sure if the playback device is the prob as i tried all the playback setting while the recording was on stereo.
Step Two, Software playoff is off of course
Step Three, I set the monitoring to On, not getting a reading from it though
Step Four, Guess ill stop here since the waves are not showing.
Far as Equipment i do have an Avid mbox hooked up but i did turn it off along with the section it was located in under the recording tab. I have a HD webcam which I also turned off. I doubt my monitors will affect it as they are in the playback tab.
Mybad I know its a hassle with some people with tech difficulties and i do apologize in advance

USB speakers?
You've not said what you are trying to record. What are you trying to record?
The playback device is important. "Stereo Mix" tells the sound card to use its own output as the recording source. If your computer is playing sounds through USB speakers, then it is not playing through the sound card and so there will be no output from the sound card, so nothing to record.

What are the available options for the playback device in the
Device Toolbar?
