Want to record guitar AND vocals simultaniously using my Line6 UX2 Guitar interface - great gadget. Anyway it's sending both vocals and guitar into one channel (stereo) in audacity, and I'd like it to be separate so I can individually edit each one afterwards. Saw a thread where someone said to go to preferences and change channel settings to '4'. I went to prefs and indeed saw lots of options in channel settings....2, 3, 4, 5,6, 7, 8 and so on. anyway NEXT time i opened audacity they were all gone!! only 1 and 2(stereo) WTF!!!

If you set Audacity to record "2 channels (stereo)" and you connect only the guitar to the Line6 UX2, does it record on just one channel or both?
If it records on both channels, is there any way on the Line6 UX2 to "pan" the guitar sound to one side or the other?

Records on just the one Channel. You can pan but that wouldn't achieve anything. It has 'Send 1&2', and 'Send 3&4'. Usually you just use 1 and 2 - guitar and vocals. I just need a way on audacity or whatever recording software, to record seperate channels simultaniously.....is it posible? and how come i saw many channels at first and then next time i run Audacity, just 2! weird

On my computer I can select up to 32 channels, though my sound card only actually has one stereo input. The reason for the extra channels is because the sound card drivers support up to 32 channels, and that is what Audacity sees, rather than the actual number of physical channels.
If you look in "Help > Audio Device Info" you will probably find one of the available input "devices" has multiple input channels listed. This does not mean that you can actually use multiple input channels independently, just that the driver for that device supports that number of channels. As far as I'm aware the Line6 UX2 Guitar interface supports a maximum of 2 physical recording channels.

Good, that's what I expected.

In Audacity the upper channel of a stereo pair is the Left channel and the lower channel is Right.
Microphone inputs 1 and 2 on the Line6 UX2 should map to Left and Right respectively in Audacity.

Whichever channel is being used by the guitar (left/upper channel or right/lower channel), use the opposite microphone input. For example, if the Guitar is recording on the upper channel in Audacity, plug your microphone into Mix input 2.

When you record (2 channels stereo) you should now have the guitar in one channel and the microphone in the other.
When you have done the recording, click on the track name and from the drop down menu select "Split to Mono".
You will now have two independent mono tracks - one with the guitar recording and one with the microphone recording.
