Export Multiple Issues

My main focus for Audacity is to transfer old LP's and Cassettes to my desk top and ultimately to my Ipod. I am following the tutorial for Labeling selections within my track. When I click on Export Multiple, I get a response "Unable to Open Target for Writing" and cannot proceed from there. If I just choose Export, no problem exporting, but now a 45 minute LP with 9 songs is stored as a single 45 minute long track and does not show the individual songs that I loaded in using the "Add Label At Selection" and using the Megadate Editor. Can anyone make a suggestion. My os is Windows 7.

Are you using special characters in the track names that are not allowed vy Windows for filenames?

Thank you for responding, but I am not using any special characters in the Label Selection. I did see that note in the tutorial

Did you put special characters in the filename? "MyGreatMusic1/7/12" is not a valid filename on many computers. No punctuation marks past dash and underscore. MyGreatMusic20120107 is OK.

What is the "Exact location" and file name that you are trying to use?
(the "file name" will depend on the settings in the "Export Multiple" dialogue screen - by default the file names will be taken from the label text).

Also, try opening the "Metadata Editor" (from File menu) and clear the Metadata (use the "Clear" button, then the "OK" button). See if that makes any difference.

If MichaelW is using the latest 1.3.14 Audacity Beta (which he should be doing on Windows 7), then Export Multiple won't even allow Windows-invalid characters to be exported, so he would never see a write error for that reason.

If nothing else obviously solves the problem, try dragging a selection for each track then File > Export Selection (and still don't use Windows-invalid characters).

Make sure you have enough disk space left on the drive you are writing to. If disk space is the problem and you don't mind losing the ability to undo what you have done already, click View > History, click the bottom item in the list, increment "Levels To Discard" to the maximum number possible, then press "Discard" then "OK".

When clicking on Export Multuiple, the file name that seems to be the default is C:Program FilesAudacity 1.3 Beta (Unicode), but I think that must noot be correct. Shouldn't I be sending it to My Music with in My Documents?

And to mention again, I am not using any special characters in the labeling.

Thanks for your responses. I don't understand Gale's explanation of dragging. Drag the selection from where to where? Maybe you could explain again with a little more detail.

I am determined to get this. I started collecting 45's and LPs in the early 60's and at my age, I am not sure what to do the large collection. Thought I would save the important ones on the computer and swap them in an out of my ipod and try to sell or give away the entire collection (except for anything from The Beatles!)

If you are not logged in as an administrator, you may well not be allowed to write to Program Files. Unfortunately, directories often default to the current program directory on Windows 7.

You can change the location to where you like, then it should be remembered next time. "My Music" in "My Documents" is a good location to export to. Either click "Choose", navigate to the folder you want to export to, select it and click OK, or type the location in the box. I suggest you use "Choose".

I assume you have labels which mark the start of each track you want to export? So click in a label, then drag from the black vertical line above the label (in the track) to the next label. If you prefer, drag to a little before the next label.
