Can't get audacity to work downloading cassettes from player

I am trying to upload some old cassettes into my computer. I have an old boom box, with a headphone jack (the only output jack it has) that I have attached via an audio cable to the microphone input on my Windows 7 computer (frontmic). I know the headphone jack works, since I have listened to the cassettes via headphone. I have downloaded the 1.3.14-beta release of audacity. I have put the audio host on mme, and the only choice I then am able to enter on the scroll down menu for output device is "speaker (realtec high def)", although these speakers are not attached. I am unable then to use the scroll down menu for input device or input channels. (If I put the audio host on windows directsound it still doesn't work). This is my first time on a user forum, so I don't quite know what to expect, but if there is anyone out there with any ideas on how to help me, I'd appreciate any input! Thanks.

Getting Win7 to work can be a challenge. We wrote a bit on this.

While a connection between your cassette machine and the Mic-In seems to work, it's not at all ideal. If you're happy with the results, then you should continue on, but there may be some significant issues with that. This is still in pre-publish corrections, but carries the basics...
