playback problem; no sound. (SOLVED)

Having just reinstalled v. 1.3.14 after upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 7, recording from a Numark TTUSB seemed to work perfectly, and a new file was created. However, on playback there is no sound. Audacity appears on the "Loudspeaker Mixer" in Window's bottom right corner, and the loudspeaker's name (Realtek High Definition Audio) correspond with the one listed on Audacitys top menu. According to the level meter, the file is also being played.
I suppose this is a beginner's question, and I must have overseen the obvious. Nonetheless, I need a hint. Please?
Also, what should I do to install the original (?) English version of the software to replace my current Norwegian language translation?
Thanks in advance,
Ole Kvaal

Have you tried turning the output volume slider up in Audacity Mixer Toolbar?
Is there a red mute sign by Audacity or the speakers in the Windows Volume Mixer?
Note you will not get sound in applications other than Audacity until you unplug USBTT from the computer or set the Windows default playback device back to Realtek:

There is only the one version of each Audacity release with support for different languages enabled in Preferences. To change language, Rediger > Innstillinger: Grensesnit.

Thanks for your reply. There were a few things that I wasn't aware of. However, my problem didn't get solved.
- Nothing is muted, neither in AC nor in Windows.
- Windows' mixer is now set to "Loudspeakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)", in which settings Audacity also appears.
- Unplugging the Numark USB before playback, gives the following error message: "Error while opening sound device. Please check the output device settings and the output rate (which is 44100).
- Replugging the above makes the output peak meter move (volume slider set to 100), still there is no sound. . . . .

After reconnecting the USB device you will need to "Rescan Audio Devices" (Transport menu) and then select the USB input device option in the
Device Toolbar.

Thanks a lot! That did it! I haven't got the faintest idea what's behind all this, but then again I suppose I don't need to know.
Guess I just can leave the settings as they are now, then? Or will I have to go through this process all over again if I should ever unplug the device?

If the USB device is connected and recognized by Windows before you launch Audacity, the USB option should be available in the Device Toolbar.
If you attach the USB device while Audacity is running you will need to either restart Audacity, or Rescan Audio Devices so that Audacity can find the USB device.
Can we mark this topic as "solved" now?

If you are happy leaving the device plugged in most of the time, be sure to right-click over the speaker icon > Playback devices (NOT Open Volume Mixer) to open "Sound". Look at Speakers for Realtek. If it says "Default Device" you are OK. If not, right-click over Speakers for Realtek and click on "Set as Default Device". This means you can hear sound in programs other than Audacity.
In Audacity "Device Toolbar" set the output device to Realtek so you can always hear sound in Audacity. Set the input device in Device Toolbar to "USB Audio CODEC".
If you ever unplug and replug the turntable intending then to leave it plugged in, reset Speakers for Realtek as Default Device in "Sound". If Audacity was open when you replugged, restart Audacity or Rescan Audio Devices.
If you prefer, unplug the turntable every time you finish recording from the turntable. You should never need to do anything in Windows. Set the Audacity input to "Microsoft Sound Mapper - Input" or "Primary Sound Capture Driver" instead of USB Audio Codec. This should let you record from the turntable whenever it's connected with no need to restart Audacity or rescan. If the turntable is not connected, this will record from whichever of the built-in inputs is Windows default when the turntable is not connected (assuming at least one input is enabled).
On Windows XP, this should just work, but on Windows Vista/7 you may need to go to the "Recording" tab of "Sound" and make sure the turntable is the "Default Device" - on my Windows 7 netbook, plugging in the USB turntable does not make it default recording device. If the turntable is not default device, right-click over it and choose "Set as Default Device". You only need do this once - if you unplug the turntable when set as default device it will become default every time it is connected.
Choosing Sound Mapper or the "Primary Sound Capture Driver" may suit you even if you leave the turntable plugged in most of the time. You then just have to remember to reset the Windows playback device to Realtek when you replug the turntable, if indeed that is necessary - on my Windows 7 netbook (but not the Windows 7 desktop) the built-in speakers remain the default playback device even when plugging in the turntable, providing you don't unplug the turntable while set as default.
