Recording voice while playing music

Hello,

We are new to audacity and we would like to know if we can play music and record with the Microphone at the same time? for karaoke :P

Yes. You can set Audacity Preferences > Recording > [X] Overdubbing to on and [ ]Playthrough to off.

You may still get timing or rhythm problems in the mixed show, but you can fix those with the Time Shift Tool (sideways black arrows).

See if that's going to work for you. If you need to get fancier, there's a way to make the voice recordings to come out even automatically with a little work.

Listening to yourself in addition to the music can be a lot harder. Home computers don't usually do that very well.

We do warn you that you need to be able to make a simple recording with your microphone before you try any of this fancy stuff. Can you do that? Press record and capture your voice in a simple track.

That's the hard step.
