Same problem here.

Was using 1.2.6, wanted to record streaming audio, no options showing in drop-down box, so I upgraded to 1.3.x.

Options now show MME and Windows soundMapper (what is that?) plus my soundcard and a Modem #1 input. I can hear what's playing, so it's there all right, but nothing gets recorded.

Any ideas, anyone?

Topic split and moved to the Audacity 1.3 forum.

"Windows Sound Mapper" sets Audacity to use the Windows sound settings that are configured in the Windows Control Panel.

The recommended version of Audacity is 1.3.14 which you can get here: http://audacityteam.org/download/beta_windows

On Vista and Windows 7 the options to record sounds playing on the computer are often hidden or completely unavailable.

I should have said, I'm on Windows XP.

No, 'fraid not. Everything else on my system is working fine.

I followed the 'update drivers' string only thing for XP. Was asked to put in the original CD etc etc - how is that an update??!! - then the wizard gave up.

Anyway, as I say, the other stuff is working and I'm not about to risk upsetting the apple cart!

In Windows XP, it should be possible to record from Mix-Out or Stereo-Mix or something like that. Set in the Windows Control Panels -- Recording tab.

WinVista and Win7 hide the settings and it's a lot more fun to find them.

You're going to have to change the Windows settings to get this, and write down what you did. If you like to record your voice or guitar as a private performance, you need to change those settings back.

"I need to load software and drivers now that I didn't need at the earlier installation of your computer. Please put the install CD in so I can find them."

It should have also offered to go on-line and find them there.

Making all the software match is a big deal in getting multiple software packages to talk to each other.

In my Windows control panel > sounds and audio > audio > recording, I've got Edirol UA-4FX (my external sound card) and Modem #1 Line Record. No Mix-out, Stereo mix or anything.

Either of those mean anything to you? I don't like changing things in case other stuff stops working!

You need to be in Windows Control Panels with Audacity closed to get these services. Mix-Out (or whatever your computer calls it) is a service that runs Record and Play at the same time in order to capture YouTube and other internet sound. The service is a dance between the internal sound card, the computer/operating system and the software drivers. if any one of them is wrong, misplaced, hidden or never installed, then recording internet audio will fail.

And yes, providing these services does mess up other sound services on your computer. It makes simple recording of a microphone difficult or impossible. This is why you need to be able not only to get into internet audio, but get back out as well.

Mix-Out makes your computer marginally unstable which is one reason it got harder and harder to find it in Vista and Win7. Macs can't do this at all without intentionally adding separate software.

What is your sound card? Is it not listed in Windows control panel > sounds and audio > audio > recording?
