I'm running windows 7 and using audacity but every time I record as soon as I press stop the soundwaves go flat and when I play it back it's completely silent.

Which exact version of Audacity are you using? (look in "Help > About Audacity" for the 3 part version number)
Does a waveform show on the track before you press stop?

This is the third report I have seen like this in two days (one of the others had a flatlined track when he pressed Skip to Start after having stopped recording. I wonder if invalid samples in the recording are doing this.
@ milkshank. Look in
Device Toolbar. What is your selected input device there? Are you recording from a microphone, a turntable. or what? How does the recording equipment connect to the computer?
How long are the recordings?
Do you have enough disk space on the drive where Audacity's temporary folder is? Look at Edit > Preferences: Directories to find out. Have you defragmented that drive using Windows defragmenter? is the drive tightly connected to the computer? Is it a portable drive?
Do you have the "Audio Cache: Play/record using RAM box" checked in the same Directories Preferences?
Immediately after the recording goes flat, can you click Help > Show Log, then Log > Save and attach the log file here? You can do this using "Upload attachment" underneath where you write your replies.
