Audacity 1.3.13 Beta - Default Possible?

Hi...
I've just started using the Beta edition with Win 7 (64-bit) after years of Audacity use with XP.
My main use of the excellent Audacity is to edit tracks by removing start/end portions etc for a cleaner result.
However,I find that sometimes when highlighting say a segment at the start with a view to cutting it, the visual look of the track window suddenly changes (white bar in the middle for example + dotted vertical bar at start and end ) which I find really irritating. It just looks 'not right'! Checking Edit>Undo just shows 'undo' greyed out. So I can't reverse the mistake.
I'm sure I'm inadvertently hitting some tab or button when I'm dragging to highlight, since this also happened a few times with the previous 126 version.
With the 126 version, though, once I'd closed down Audacity and re-opened it, everything went back to 'normal'. No problem.
However, with Beta, it appears to be holding onto the 'mistake' for all subsequent tracks and as I said 'undo' is greyed out so I can't even use that! Even after rebooting computer, the 'mistake' remains! Really annoying!
I've looked around the interface and can't find a way to at least default the settings or perhaps 'toggle off' the tab/button I mistakenly hit in the first place.
Don't know why 'undo' greys out and I wonder if this has been overlooked in Beta.
I've uninstalled then reinstalled Audacity twice now and the same thing happens. I wish I knew why the visuals sometimes change as above when I drag to highlight but I'm at a loss at the moment. That would of course be helpful!
Only way I've managed to restore things is to uninstall then reinstall Audacity or do a complete system restore!
I'm probably missing something simple here...so could anyone help me with this?
Many thanks
