Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Audacity 1.3.13 Beta - Default Possible?

Post by kwil » Tue Dec 06, 2011 5:56 pm

Hi...
I've just started using the Beta edition with Win 7 (64-bit) after years of Audacity use with XP.
My main use of the excellent Audacity is to edit tracks by removing start/end portions etc for a cleaner result.

However,I find that sometimes when highlighting say a segment at the start with a view to cutting it, the visual look of the track window suddenly changes (white bar in the middle for example + dotted vertical bar at start and end ) which I find really irritating. It just looks 'not right'! Checking Edit>Undo just shows 'undo' greyed out. So I can't reverse the mistake.

I'm sure I'm inadvertently hitting some tab or button when I'm dragging to highlight, since this also happened a few times with the previous 126 version.
With the 126 version, though, once I'd closed down Audacity and re-opened it, everything went back to 'normal'. No problem.

However, with Beta, it appears to be holding onto the 'mistake' for all subsequent tracks and as I said 'undo' is greyed out so I can't even use that! Even after rebooting computer, the 'mistake' remains! Really annoying!

I've looked around the interface and can't find a way to at least default the settings or perhaps 'toggle off' the tab/button I mistakenly hit in the first place.
Don't know why 'undo' greys out and I wonder if this has been overlooked in Beta.

I've uninstalled then reinstalled Audacity twice now and the same thing happens. I wish I knew why the visuals sometimes change as above when I drag to highlight but I'm at a loss at the moment. That would of course be helpful!

Only way I've managed to restore things is to uninstall then reinstall Audacity or do a complete system restore!

I'm probably missing something simple here...so could anyone help me with this?
Many thanks

Could you post a screen shot of what it looks like.
If you're unsure how to capture a screen shot, see here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind ... reen-shots
The forum accepts JPG and PNG images. Use "Upload attachment" (below the compose message box) to upload the screenshot.

Hi Steve...thanks for taking time to reply.
If I knew how to duplicate the mistake, I'd happily send a screenshot. But since I don't know how it happens...well...
Remember too, if it does, it leaves me with the original problem till I uninstall and re-install or 'system restore'... :o
Surely I can't be the only one who's experienced this?
Many thanks

A screenshot would have been helpful, but in the absence I'm trying to visualise your description, which sounds quite specific and unique. Difficult to say with any certainty but I would suspect that it is caused by a bug in one of the "drivers" on your system, possibly the video card driver. It doesn't sound like a "user problem".

If your computer is a branded computer, try checking on the manufacturers web site to see if updated drivers are available.

It sounds as if you enabled Multi-Tool by pressing F6. If you exit Audacity with Multi-Tool enabled, it will launch again with it enabled. If it happens, just press F1 to get Selection Tool back again.

Default settings can be got back to by exiting Audacity and editing audacity.cfg down to

Code: Select all

NewPrefsInitialized=1
as described here:
http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Preferences#stored .

Uninstalling and reinstalling Audacity doesn't revert your previous settings to default. You have to edit audacity.cfg as above to do that.

Hi Gale...thanks for taking time to reply. Much appreciated.
Yes!...it's the Multi-Tool!...Now that I know how to get to 'audacity.cfg' and reset to default if necessary, I deliberately tried to duplicate my mistake again. I did!...
Pressing F1 as you suggested did help, but I also decided to ensure I could reset to default, so I did...All went without a hitch!...
For anyone not sure on how to get to the 'audacity.cfg' file and assuming Win7 Home Premium (64-bit):

C:>Users>YOUR NAME>Application Data (ensure 'Show Hidden Files' is selected: Win Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>View>select appropriate)>Roaming>Audacity>'audacity.cfg'>open in Notepad>delete all but 'NewPrefsInitialized=1'
Save changes to 'audacity.cfg'>restart Audacity.

Many thanks again, Gale (and Steve) for your input
