Greetings!
The sound card in our computer (Gateway desktop running XP) died recently, rather, it developed horrid distortion. I was told it was hardwired to the motherboard, so I decided to go with an external. I found an awesome deal on a Diamond 7.1 USB external sound card, and it works great for playing streaming audio, and line input devices.
So what's the trouble? Simple. I cannot for the life of me get my Audacity program to get any sort of input signal, whether it's from streaming audio or line input devices. I see three input options on Audacity (although I remember the older versions having five, with an option for streaming audio), and those three options are Stereo Mix, Line-In, and Microphone.
The USB card bypasses the original sound card by taking any computer sounds via a USB cable to route them into our speaker system. Since the stock sound card is fried, I do not have to option of re-routing the signal back into the original card.
Any suggestions?
Recording using an external sound card?

Are you looking at the Audacity Drop-Down Menu, or Audacity Preferences > Devices?

If you couldn't get it to work, how do you know that?it works great for playing streaming audio, and line input devices.

Re: Recording using an external sound card?
AH-HA! THANK YOU! I went to Preferences, and then Devices, and there it was!
I think I might have put it wrong. What I meant to say was that I got my new sound card to read streaming audio and line input devices, but I couldn't get those signals fed into Audacity. But I have now! Thanks again!
