Can't close Audacity

I have been working with Audacity 1.3.13. I closed down my computer and took it with me over the weekend, rebooting two or three times while I was away. This morning I came back to start working again and I was told that it couldn't open Audacity because there was already an instance running. I could find no instance of the program, nor did Task Master list it. So I decided the easiest thing to do was delete the program and reinstall. But on installation I received an error message: "An error occurred while trying to replace the existing file. Delete failed; code 5. Access is denied." There is still an Audacity folder left on the machine, with several files in it, under Programs so I tried deleting that, but it would not let me do that either claiming one or more of the files was in use. So how can I get rid of whatever is causing the problem, and reinstall Audacity. I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium. Thanks for any help. Rambok

This morning when I booted up the computer, it allowed me to delete the Audacity folder and the remaining files, and it allowed me to reinstall the program. I had booted up the computer several times between the last time I had used Audacity and this morning, and it would not allow me to access it. I have no idea why this time it worked and the last few times it didn't, complaining that an invisible Audacity was already running. So I guess my problem is solved. Thanks

If you installed the program in the first place and you are seeing problems, it's better if possible to run unins000.exe in the Audacity installation folder to uninstall Audacity properly.
Audacity wouldn't be running at reboot unless you have it in your Startup folder, but sometimes Windows can get confused and think files are in use when they are not. This can persist reboot, too.
If this happens again and you cannot see Audacity or whatever program it is in the "Processes" tab of Task Manager, this tool may help:
