Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

couldn't save project... help!

Post by roxe » Wed Nov 30, 2011 8:44 pm

I'm running XP Pro SP3 and using Audacity 1.3.13.

I recorded about 58 minutes of audio this morning... and without reading the manual (my VERY bad) I hilited 12:48 minutes at the beginning I wished to delete... but I used "cut" instead of delete. I also did the same thing to a tiny space at the ending. Of course, it then would NOT allow me to save the project. So I just exported it to a mp3 file which seems to play OK.

However, I did save the original folder (that has all the pieces of audio (565mb) in the temp folder) into another partition on my hdd. I have deleted the original original folder of the recording in the temp folder...(the one I messed up and couldn't save) and have copied the copy back into the temp folder.

Now, I would like to put all 565mb in that original folder (three sub folders in there) back into Audacity in one long file as it was originally before I messed it up by cutting instead of deleting on both ends of the file... so I can learn how to do it correctly this time - so I can then save the project... hopefully :)

Can that be done?? and how??

Thanks for your time,
roxe

I don't think that will account for why you could not save the project. It should still have been possible to Save unless there was some other reason (which I strongly suspect there was) for why you could not save. At this stage I think we stand little chance of working out what went wrong. Was there any error message when you tried to save?

To recover a project you need to have both the data folder and the AUP file. Unless this was a vitally important recording I would recommend that you write it off. If it was vitally important, there's a page here about recovering projects (but you could waste a lot of time on this for no result) http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... shRecovery

Thanks! Steve for your help. Am working on renumbering the files. Since I'm retired I do have time on my hands to do this!

Thanks again!

No help this time roxe, but I would suggest that the next time that you make a capture recording of an unrepeatable event (a radio broadcast say) then the first thing that you do after capture is to make a backup WAV copy. Then you can always return to (a copy of) that backup copy to start over with the editing if necessary. (16 bit WAV would be ok 32-bit float WAV would be better, but is twice the size).

Also remember the Undo function which lets you step back through your edits to an earlier state - but note that once you close Audacity the Undo steps are then lost. Seee this page from the 1.3 manual: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Undo ... nd_History
