I just downloaded and can't get any sound.

Post by Bently Lamar » Sat Nov 26, 2011 3:23 am

I have been racking my brain for the last hour trying to figure out why I am not getting any sound to Audacity. I am using a PA with a mixing board for my sound. I am going out of the mixer into the line in on my computer's sound card. It's a Creative SB Audigy with imputs and out puts on a front panel. I am wanting to record songs that I've written and am going through a GNX4 into the mixer and from the mixer to the computer. I can hear what I am playing just fine but none of the sound is going to Audacity. I have gone to edit/ preferences/ devices and set the speakers out for playback and line in for recording. I also tried the what you hear option as well as a microphone. Still nothing. Any suggestions?

I presume that you mean this is an internal (not USB) sound card?
Is this the only sound card in the computer?
Which version of Windows?

Yes it is an internal sound card. I'm running Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. Every thing else to do with the sound card is working.

Oh I forgot to add that it is the only sound card in the computer...at least that is active. The sound card that came on the motherboard is still there though not enabled.

Is it disabled in BIOS?

Open the Windows Mixer and enable "Show disabled devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices" as described here: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer ... es#vistacp

What recording devices are shown and which are greyed out (post a screen shot if that's easier).

In Audacity, click on the "Input Device" drop down menu on the Device Toolbar.
What options are shown? (please list the full names, or post a suitable screenshot)

The on board sound card is disabled in bios

on the sound card the list is:

microphone ( currently unavailable)
Analog Mix line in ( default device)
Line in 2 Mic (currently unavailable)
cd digital ( currently unavailable)
s/pdif- in ( currently unavailable)
what you hear ( currently unavailable)
Auxilary2 (currently unavailable)

In Audacity:

Microsoft sound maper imput
Analog Mix ( line/cd/aux/TAD/PC)
Microphone
S/PDIF-in
line-in 2/mic2
"what you hear"
cd Digital

I have this set up to use the Analog Mix as my mixer a Mackie cr-1604 is an analog model.

Thanks, I think I'm starting to get a picture of the problem but now we need to get into the detail.
What is the exact model number of your Creative SB Audigy? (there are about a dozen different types of SB Audigy).
Are you sure that the sockets on the front panel are correctly connected to the sound card?
Do you have the most up to date drivers installed for your sound card on Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit (from Creative, not some generic Windows drivers).
Do you have the Creative Mixer installed?
