Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Wont record other than through "Software Playthrough"

Post by faihido » Wed Nov 23, 2011 10:55 pm

I cant get Audacity to record anything (voice/singing) through my USB T-bone microphone other than having "Software Playthrough" clicked in - which means I hear myself when I record and it bugs the hell out of me (with the latency and everything).

I never had such problems until I some days ago decided to get the newest version of Audacity - the beta version 1.3.13. Going back to the older version doesnt rectify the problem. It just wont record anything without Software Playthrough clicked.

This is how it looks like if I try anything else (and nothing happens):

I downloaded the old version audacity-win-1.3.12.exe from the web. This didnt work out as I wrote in the post above. I checked with the inbuilt sound recorder and had no problems with that etc.

However I found the last version i used before I upgraded to 1.3.13 in the download folder (audacity-win-unicode-1.3.12.exe which I downloaded in October 2010). And hello and behold suddenly i can record again without Software Playthrough...

Problem solved...

I suppose the first thing you need to do in Audacity is turn Software Playthrough off and work from there. If you get the red recording meters and the blue waves on the timeline, then you are making a recording, even if you can't hear it.

The Recording dropdown and Windows Control Panels all should point to your sound device and nothing magic or incorrect.

Koz, of course I tried that. I just would not move if I didnt have Software Playthrough ticked in (see pic in first post). Im putting this down as a bug in the software.

I tried reinstalling Audacity. I tried recording with other softare (which worked flawlessly).

Anyway I solved it by finding the older version (audacity-win-unicode-1.3.12.exe) on my HDD - I uninstalled 1.3.13 and installed that Instead. I can now record without Software Playthrough ticked in.

"audacity-win-1.3.12.exe" is the non-Unicode version meant for Windows 98/ME built with an older version of Visual Studio. I don't think it's very likely that this would explain the difference between that and the Unicode 1.3.12 and wonder if the problem is merely intermittent.

If anything, software playthrough tends to prevent recording rather than making it work. It's not that uncommon that Audacity recording will stall but work again after reboot. I don't think we know why that happens exactly but no-one on Windows to my knowledge has ever had a continuous problem like that.
