Hiss remaining after Noise Removal

Post by Scott Holder » Wed Nov 23, 2011 5:23 am

On some recordings from audio tapes, after using Noise Removal, the quiet sections will have no noise, but the voice/music sections will have some hiss remaining. The hiss pulsates/rises and falls with the voice or music volume.

Suggestions will be appreciated :-)

Don't expect 100% noise removal on noisy tracks without considerable damage to the remaining sound. The noise removal effect works best for removing low level noise.
Try increasing the Sensitivity slider and reducing the Attack/Decay to zero, then use a modest amount of Noise reduction. It is usually better (subjectively) to have some (fairly constant) noise remaining rather than noticeable audio damage or pulsating noise. Effective noise reduction is a careful balancing act between how much noise is removed and how much damage is done.

Thanks, Steve. I'm guessing a bit of experimenting will be called for. Do you have recommendations for levels for the Noise Reduction and Sensitiviy sliders? Where would you start them at?

Absolutely.
One thing that can help is if you increase the "Preview" duration. I usually have it set at about 5 seconds.
Edit menu > Preferences > Playback > Length of Preview

I normally start with Sensitivity at zero, Noise Reduction at about 14, Frequency Smoothing at 150 and Attack/Decay at 0.1.
