Help with audio monitoring meter (SOLVED)

I have just downloaded 1.3.13-beta (Unicode) and have successfully installed the software in a Windows XP computer. The computer has a Line-in from an amp and the audio sound comes through the computer speakers. When I click the Audacity Input level meter and Start Start Monitoring, the Red bars project across for a second then just disappear. Could someone please indicate if there is something wrong my end or a software glitch
Thanks
jack

Maybe you're looking at the metering reaction to turning on in a system with no audio. In that case, the meter would pop up and settle back down to zero -- possibly further to the left than you could see it.
I don't know how WinXP works exactly, but the general idea is to select Line-In in the Windows Recording Control Panels. There are conditions in WinXP where you can select Line-In on the Playback panels and hear the speakers, but not do anything else.
After you sort that, go into Audacity Preferences > Devices and set the right things there. Again, I'm not a Windows Elf. Restart Audacity and click once inside the red recording meters and they will go into Monitor Mode. That shows you what's at the input without going into full record.

Thanks you are a genius, I selected Line In for Recording in Preferences which proved to be the answer. I now have continual feed in and able to control the volume also.
I'm very grateful, so thanks again
