The Vocal Remover in Audacity is a simple arithmetic tool that removes everything in the left-right middle of a stereo show. It also usually removes bass and drums and can damage other music as well. The tool in Audacity comes with tools and adjusters that can help if the rest of the performance gets damaged.

Follow the instructions when you launch the tool. You need to be in Audacity 1.3 to get the extra adjusters.

If you have a highly compressed MP3 song, that may be as good as it gets. MP3 compression has damage of its own and can cause problems with Vocal Removal.
