using 2 channel tube mic amp w/Audacity

Post by donswife » Thu Nov 17, 2011 10:09 pm

Years ago I bought a two channel tube mic pre-amp by ART from a friend of mine who was an audio engineer. I lost touch with them to get help. I wanted to use it to make my own vocal recordings with Audacity. But I can't find a tutorial on them, and I don't know if I should plug it into the back where a tall skinny standard Logitech type mic would go or if it should be plugged in the front. When I plug it in the back I get tons of static. I got static with the Logitech. Not sure if I should scrap it and go by a new mic or if I should try to use the pre-amp. I was told it was expensive but I don't know how to use it. I even went to ARTS site and they don't have the model listed -

Where do I plug it in?

What are the standard settings? (it says High Z input, Input, Gain, Phantom, Phase, etc?)

You're going to have to get seriously closer than that. That's not even enough to wild guess at. What is the model number of the amplifier? What's your computer -- exactly? Model numbers.

My computer is a Dell 8400 - and we had hooked the amp up to it before but I just don't remember how to do it, etc w/Audacity. We were using Cubebase but I don't want to learn that program looks too complex. -

The model for the amp is... on the back it says Type 10 CE - near the serial # but there is no other info on it except

Dual MP
Two Channel Tube Microphone Preamplifier
ART Applied Research & Tech

It has two outlined channels on the box with small light ups -

Channel 1 and Channel 2.

I thought about just trying a new generic mic to see if that will work .But static is on my cheap Logitech AND on this amp. I got it to record in Audacity but both are inaudible practically due to the static. I blew the dust away and did the suggestions for reducing static, etc. A-
