Poor mic signal with new computer
Audacity worked fine with my old Compac (XP), which I've replaced with a Dell Inspiron 560. Now I get very poor signal strength with Audacity. Where did I goof?

Windows may be "helping you" by auto level setting your microphone. This is one of the new Windows conferencing tools.

I've checked out everything on your link and still get nothing usable when I try to record. This exact setup I mentioned was working perfectly with my old computer (Compac XP). I just wish there was a list of things for me to do with the new computer to get Audacity working like it was.
One thing I've noticed: audacity IS recording something because putting the Track Panel gain control to max on playback, I can faintly hear myself.
