Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Using:
Windows 7. (custom built)
Audacity 1.3.13 beta.

Edit->Preferences:
Under Recording there is "no devices found" This makes sense because I have no devices connected, but I'm only trying to record directly from the computer (internet/vlc/etc)

I have read and followed this (http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer ... es#vistacp), this (http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/User ... und_device) and many others, to no avail.

These are the only pieces I know about.

Some computers don't hide the "Stereo Mix" option. It's just not there. For those people, there is Total Recorder and FreeCorder.

To record directly from the computer you still need to have a "device". Without some sort of audio device there is no sound on the computer and so nothing to record.
Does your computer have sound at all? If so, what sort of sound card?
Did you follow the instructions here: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer ... es#vistacp
Do you have any recording devices showing up after enabling "Show disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices"?
If so, what devices? Are they greyed out?

If all else fails, you can connect a cable from the line-out (green) port of the computer to the line-in (blue), and choose the line-in as recording source

I will search the house for this cable and try this option. I feel like it'll be the only way to fix it.
