Overdubbing problems using ASUS Eee PC - Windows 7

Post by alexigente » Sat Nov 12, 2011 10:47 pm

I have seen very similar posts on this problem, so please forgive my redundancy as I am not sure how relevant specific hardware is:
I can properly record Track 1 with no problem, However, Track 2 also records my first track plus anything new I add onto it during the overdub. This also occurs with any subsequent tracks.

I have adjusted some of the playback and recording options in both Windows 7 as well as Audacity (too many combinations to mention) in order to see if I can resolve this issue. I've had limited success, meaning that when I think all is good, I'll try overdubbing once again only to discover that while the second track will only have the fresh material (Hurray! Finally!) it will sound somewhat garbled and tinny (Boo!), and it will have the out-of-sync problems that have been discussed in other posts.

Here are my specs:
ASUS Eee PC with Atom 1.80 GHz processor, 2GB RAM
Windows 7 Home Premium
Audacity 1.3.13-beta

Under Windows 7 Sound/Recording, I have chosen the "Stereo Mix Realtek High Definition Audio" as the Default Device.
Here are the various options I have tried within Audacity: Checking "Overdub" and "Software Playthrough". Unchecking "Overdub" makes Track 2 record and playback clearly, but I am not able to hear Track 1 while recording, which defeats my purpose. Choosing "Software Playthrough" is just a mess, with lots of increasing feedback, so, I have disabled this permanently.

Thank you very much.

That one happens when you apply the Windows settings to record internet audio. That process is poison to live recording.

You need to do the opposite of this.
it will sound somewhat garbled and tinny
Perfectly correct. That's Windows helping you out with echo cancellation and environment suppression -- needed for Skype and Audio Conferencing.

it will have the out-of-sync problems that have been discussed in other posts.
You hit all of them, you lucky dog.

That one is Latency Correction described in these postings.

If you have obvious delay or echo when you listen to yourself live, you're stuck with that one. That's why I wrote the work in progress for hardware overdubbing.

Thank you, Koz. Which option(s) will allow me to hear Track 1 without it being recorded onto Track 2? I'm sure I'm missing something here.
