No Sound in Audacity

Post by cetty519 » Sat Nov 12, 2011 10:35 pm

I am unable to pick up any sound in Audacity, I can hear everything else ( iTunes/Windows/Ableton ) all through my mixer Alesis MultiMix8 USB2.0 . I want to record vinyl into audacity but it will not pick up anysound ive screwed around in the preferences forever even in the Windows sound cards & devices. I can hear the music off the vinyl through my monitors/mixer but there is no sound at all in audacity. Any suggestions?

I removed your duplicate post on the end of a topic about recording computer playback. Better to start a new topic as you now have.

Is the turntable and amplifier/pre-amp connected to the mixer? If so, restart Audacity so it sees the mixer.Choose the "Alesis USB Audio CODEC" or similar as "Recording Device" in Device Toolbar in Audacity. For "Playback Device" you have to choose the inbuilt computer sound device if that is what your monitors are connected to, and in that case you will also have to put a check mark in Transport > Software Playthrough. Make sure the mixer is set up so it is sending the vinyl input over USB to the computer.

Please state what version of Windows you are using if you still have problems.

The Turntable is connected to the mixer and the mixer is usb to the pc i figured that would be no problem since i am already hearing the record playing, I've tryed restarting audacity and changed everything in preferences so it is set to Alesis but still no sound from audacity. I am running Windows 7

It should not be connected direct to the mixer unless the mixer has a phono input.

Where are you hearing the record playing now? Where do you want to hear it playing?

Is the problem:
  • that you cannot hear the record in Audacity when it's recording?
  • that you can hear the record in Audacity when it's recording but not when it isn't recording?
  • that you cannot record the record, only a flat line?

Do you need to hear playback from Audacity in the mixer? Have you read the Manual for the mixer? It may be simpler to play back to the inbuilt sound card to begin with using the instructions in my last post.

I cannot hear anything in audacity, it does not pick up any sound, i can hear the record playing through my speakers i have connnected to the mixer so I know there is sound but it does not pick up in audacity... I also noticed audacity picks up NO sound whether its from youtube/ my mixer... Ive read the manual front to back for the mixer it is set up properly , I just can't record in audacity because nothing is being picked up soundwise

Sadly, we can't see over your shoulder.

If you start a fresh project, try to record, then Edit > Select > All and Effect > Amplify, what value is in "New Peak Amplitude (dB)"? If it says "Infinity" there is no connection between the mixer and Audacity. In that case, try another USB cable that you know works.

Audacity will not record from the mixer unless you set its input device to the mixer and sound is coming through to the computer from the mixer. It will not record from the mixer unless you unmute and turn up the input volume for the mixer's sound device in Windows Control Panel. Have you tried right-click over the speaker icon by the system clock > Recording Devices, then right-click over the USB audio codec for the mixer > Properties. Then look at the "Levels" tab to adjust the input volume.

.
Again, to record computer playback you have to go into Windows and configure it so that any "stereo mix" or similar recording input is listed and enabled. See:
