I have been developing an article on this for the manual or the Wiki - it is not formally published yet, but you should be able to read it on my user page:

waxcylinder, I wish I could say that your awesome guide helped me with this issue, but alas - I still cannot record.
I'm only trying to record internal sounds (from youtube/websites/vlc, etc) but it just won't work on the beta version of audacity (I have win7, but tried the standard version just in case and no luck there either). I've used audacity for YEARS and love it and really want to fix this problem so I can keep using it.

To record sounds that are playing on your computer, the recording (input) device needs to be set to "Stereo Mix".
Unfortunately on most Windows 7 computers this option is either disabled by default or is completely missing.
If it is only disabled, see here for how to enable it:
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer ... es#vistacp
If Stereo Mix is completely missing then we can't do anything about that and you will need to use a workaround as described here:

My wife could'nt get recording audio playing on her new W7 laptop with Audacity no matter what she tried - so she bought TotalRecorder to make the recordings and then does her processing in Audacity. Total Recorder costs around $18 and you can get it from here:
