Hi.
I am having a problem with recording.
I am recording guitar via a USB connected Line 6 UX2.
When recording a first track, no problems.
No latency. No echo.
Can hear what I'm playing through the speakers (monitors connected to the UX2).
When I record a second track (overbubbed) I can hear the first track perfectly.
I can hear the notes I am playing for the second track perfectly - no latency.
But I also hear what I'm playing for the second track about half a second after I've played it.
If I play back the recording after recording a second track, the playback is perfect - not recording the repeated notes I hear when I'm actually playing them.
I am using Audacity 1.3.13.
Computer is a fairly new one with a chip which runs at 3.10GHz and with 8GB RAM.
Windows 7 64 bit.
Same issue with Audacity 1.3.12 which I had loaded, but removed and loaded 1.3.13 in case that was an issue.
In preferences/recording, Overdub is ticked and Software Playthrough is ticked.
If I untick Software Playthrough and try to record another track, the cursor is red and moves at about one hundredth of the speed it should and playback just produces a "noise" wherever I played something.
I have used Audacity for a long time and had no problems on my previous computers (XP and VISTA).
Any ideas please ?
Many thanks.
Bluesboy.

Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Re: Echo on second track recorded
That would be as long as it takes Software Playthrough to play through. Sound gets late any time the computer has to stop and think about it.
Try this, plug the headphones into the UX2 and Force Audacity and Windows to play out to the UX2. Not just record. Some external mixers/processors will do a mix between live performance and previous tracks if you do that.
Then all you have to worry about is latency.

Re: Echo on second track recorded
Hi Koz
Thanks for this.
On a second track of recorded guitar I can hear what I'm playing live immediately through the speakers so it's not a latency problem.......don't think so anyway.
It's just that after about half a second, the live note I play which I can hear through the speakers plays again.
The speakers are plugged into the UX2.
I'm pretty sure all sound is directed via the UX2 in or out.
When I record the first track, I don't get anything repeated.

Re: Echo on second track recorded
You don't want software playthrough on in Audacity, do you, if you are monitoring in the UX2? If you get weird speed problems when playthrough is off it probably means sample rate mismatches. Set the Audacity project rate (bottom left) and the "Default Format" for UX2 in the "Recording" tab of "Sound" in Windows to the same sample rate; make sure that rate is one that UX2 supports. 44100 Hz should work, but read the UX2 Manual.Bluesboy wrote:In preferences/recording, Overdub is ticked and Software Playthrough is ticked.

If that doesn't work, just set the correct project rate for the device in Audacity, but set "Host" in Audacity Device Toolbar to "Windows DirectSound" and tick both "Exclusive Mode" boxes in "Sound". More details here:

Also do you have the UX 2 driver update for Windows 7? Search here:

There is a Windows 7 driver update right at the bottom of the page you come to after the search.
