Have been using 1.3 on Windows XP with success for some time now, but suddenly when trying to export a file I'm getting an error message that reads, ""audacity..has encountered a problem and needs to close" I tried uninstalling and re-installing it, but the same message is coming up. Anyone?

Are you using "Audacity 1.3.13 Unicode"? (look in the Help menu > About Audacity).
What format are you exporting as? Have you tried exporting in other formats?
