Trouble with Drop Down Menu

HI! So, I just downloaded audacity for a project. The problem is after like ten minutes of using it it has a weird tendency for all the drop down menus to be greyed out so i can't use them. If i want to cut a piece, i'll highlight it and then go to edit and i can't cut it, its greyed out. Same with anything else i try to do. But then sometimes randomly it will work, after trying to do it for five to ten minutes. Please help!

Most of the menu items will be greyed out if Audacity is in "Pause" mode. Playback must be "Stopped" and not just "Paused".
Also check that you are not running out of disk space.
