I'm using Audacity 1.3 on Windows XP to record audio books. Out of the 10 cassettes, #6 & #10 have not finished recording. Audacity completes the first side of both tapes and switches to the second side. After a period of time, 45 minutes of one tape and 32 minutes of the second, a red line appears on the Audacity screen and the line flickers, but it won't record any further - no flat line, nothing - like it's locked in that moment. The system tells me that there is 117 hours left of recording time so I have plenty of space.
I keep thinking that it may be on the tape since I recording them in order and tapes #7 through #9 recorded fine after #6 blew up on me. Any suggestions?

Thanks Steve. I working off a Cassette2USB converter. Nothing fancy but cheap and portable. Judging from the results from the tapes that did convert over, it was easy and sounds fine.

Re: Audacity quits recording
Check the USB cable for tightness or replace it.
Connect the recorder to a spare USB port, not a hub.
Disconnect other USB devices and close other programs if practical.
Reboot the computer.
Defragment the disk you are writing to.
