Lots of posts on this I know, but all the suggestions I've looked at don't solve my problem, so here goes......
OS: Windows XP
Audacity 1.3.13
Sound card: Realtek AC97 Audio
Settings:- speaker: MS sound mapper/realtek AC97; microphone: MS sound mapper/realtek AC97 (have tried both settings). Project rate: 44100/44800 (tried both)
Problem: Clicking the record button generates the message: Error opening sound device, check input settings and project sample rate

any suggestions most welcome

On the project sample rate did you really mean 44800? The most common sample rates are 44100 and 48000.

Is there a Realtek icon near the time/date in the lower right corner of the Desktop?
