The first song ends cold and the second starts cold.

I want to combine the respective ending and start of the two songs, with maybe a half-second of crossfade in between.

How can I do that?

Put the two songs on separate tracks and use Time Shift Tool (F5) to align the end of one with a point (say) three seconds into the start of the other. Then use envelope tool (F2) separately on each track to make a smooth fade out where the one track is ending and a smooth fade in where the other is starting. Playing or exporting will mix the two tracks together, and if you get the fade right the songs will blend into each other seamlessly..
