Click Track does not generate a click track for the length of audio you select. You have to tell it the number of beats per measure (BPM) then either the number of measures (to determine the length) OR the duration (in minutes and seconds in whole numbers).

See http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Generate_Menu#click or in Click Track, click "Help Screen 1" in "Action Choice."

If you click in your current click track then the |<< button, then tell Click Track the length you want, it will generate the click track from the start of the track.

Thanks Gale, I will try this, I can add a click to the beginning ok, what I cant manage to work out is how to have the click for the duration of the track.

I can only seem to add the click at the beginning

A click track is normally only a convenience to make it easy to sing or play to the beat when you are recording an overdub. It does not have to be exactly the length of the song.

Another way to do it is just to generate the default click track without changing any of its settings, then Effect > Repeat as many times as needed to make the click track at least as long as the song. If you double-click in the song, the middle spinbox at the bottom ("End/Length") will tell you the length of the song.

You should make the click track first and then Import your music. You can slide the music earlier and later so the beats line up if you need that.

Thanks everyone, some really good suggestions. what I am doing is using my custom backing mp3 tracks then add a click for the duration of the track

Left side click
right side track mp3

Then the drummer can here the click when playing live this will give us a count in at the beginning and a beat to stay in time for the duration.
