Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

problem with the latest version of Audacity

Post by justinrpg » Tue Oct 04, 2011 11:30 am

I originally had Audacity 1.3.0 installed onto my Windows 7 computer, I upgraded to 1.3.13 just today, because of a bug you guys told me about that was causing me not to be able to save the .wav file anywhere but My Documents.... but now I have a problem... when I run the latest version of Audacity I get the following error "error opening sound device" and if I go to preferences under recording it says "no devices" it doesn't even recognize my microphone plugged in or anything!!!! but when I uninstalled 1.3.13 and downgraded back to 1.3.0, it was working just fine again!!!!!!!!!!! can you tell me what's up with the latest version? my soundcard is SigmaTel

Do you mean 1.3.0 or 1.3.9 which you had back in May?

Have you checked in "Sound" to see if Windows has the microphone or other inputs enabled? Instructions are at:
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer ... es#vistacp

If that does not help, you may be running old or Microsoft generic drivers for Sigmatel that the newer audio I/O interface in 1.3.13 does not like. I suggest you update the drivers for Sigmatel to the latest Windows 7 drivers provided by the motherboard or computer manufacturer. If you have 64-bit Windows 7 you need 64-bit drivers. See:

I meant 1.3.9...... I have already got the latest drivers (the manufacturer hasn't released ANY updates since I last updated my sound driver... and my microphone is enabled, I can hear it in computer speakers.... but the latest version of Audacity doesn't think so

If you click the Windows globe and type "Sound Recorder" without quotes, you can try the Windows Sound Recorder. Does that record? You'll have to save the recording to tell if it has recorded correctly.

If you wanted to you could go here:
http://code.google.com/p/audacity/downloads/list?can=1

and try 1.3.10, 1.3.11 and 1.3.12 in sequence to see which is the last version that records. It might be useful information.

Before you do that, you could try:
  • Transport > Rescan Audio Devices.
  • Exit Audacity, Initialise audacity.cfg to reset its settings, then try and record. Instructions are at:
    http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Audac ... reset_beta
  • Right-click over "audacity.exe" in the folder you run Audacity from, choose "Properties" then click "Compatibility". Tell us what "Compatibility" is set to now, then experiment by changing compatibility to another setting. Let us know any new setting that works.
