Switch off scrolling during recording

Post by Lonesome Drifter » Fri Sep 30, 2011 2:52 pm

Hi,

Newbie here, go easy on me :-) I've been browsing the web all day trying to get an answer to my question but can't seem to find it but it could be because i don't know the correct terminology so forgive me if this is a common issue and there are answers 'out there'

Basically, i have started recording live shows from the soundboard since i started promoting but i'm running into problems. Basically, i can set up the microphone etc so the recording doesn't clip etc no problem but what's happening is when the curser get's to the end of the page (Timeline is it called?) and goes to the next page, my recording misses a beat at that point or jumps very slightly. What i want to know is can i have my setting so when i record it just stays on one page rather than jump to the next screen?

Secondly, is there any way of recovering my recording so it doesn't miss a beat etc at those points? I recorded a whole show and it was at a good level etc but each time the recording would have jumped to the next page i get this problem and it's pretty annoying to be honest cause i can't use the recordings.

For the record i am on Windows 7 ultimate, 1Gb.

Any help in the most basic language and guides would be most grateful.

Many thanks.

That makes me crazy, too for different reasons. It makes it difficult to find precision edit points when the display keeps flipping.

Audacity Preferences > Tracks > [ ] Update Display... (de-select)

Restart Audacity if you do this.

Do you actually get a glitch in the recorded show? What does it look like on the timeline? Is there a hole that you can "close up" and get rid of the problem?

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply. I've now de-selected that.

The glitch is is a little bit like when a cd jumps 1/3rd of a second or something. I can copy and send a segment if you like to see what i mean? If it's recoverable in any way i'll do it but i'm not sure if it is.

Many thanks.

Yes, please. In WAV or FLAC (harmlessly compressed). The Attach system will only allow about three or four seconds, so don't try to send the five hour presentation.

For a start you will probably find it easier if you zoom out on the waveform so more of the waveform is displayed on the screen.

Yeah will try that too, thanks.

I presume the attached piece of audio i posted which is representative of the problem i have with my recordings is un-fixable then, is it??

There is no need to restart Audacity after changing "Update Display".

@ Lonesome Drifter, do you want to vote for the record or playback cursor to stop still and the waveform scrolls continually? It might be one solution.

I can't honestly see anything "fixable" (or even hear anything "wrong") with that clip, but I don't know what the words of the original are supposed to be.

If you get skips just because the display scrolls I suggest going through all the tips on this page:

I will go through those tips, thanks. I can only attach a certain size clip as 1mb is the max allowed. If you listen to the beat, you will hear it skip, difficult i know when the clips is only 3 seconds long. I use something called pando (free) to send bigger files, i'll happily send a 30 second clip or something if someone can just take a listen and see if it's fixable.

Thanks.

There is no way to "fix" content that is missing unless there is identical content somewhere else in the recorded track that can be inserted.
