Volume problem - one track louder than other tracks?

Hi there
I am using Audacity to put music together for an upcoming dressage (horse training competition - this one is a muscial). I am having a problem with the volume of one of the tracks that I have cut and pasted into a new file. I've cut and pasted bits of songs and faded them in and out and have silences in between.
How can I get all the tracks that I've cut and pasted to be the same volume? I dont know why this track is so loud. I bought it off itunes so should be fine, you would think.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you still have each audio section on it's own Audacity track, then you can use the volume slider on the left end of the track to lower the volume of the loud track.

thanks for your reply.
I've tried that - changed volume using slider on left and then saved it, but it didn't make a difference. Maybe I should record instead of save project?

Correct! That only adjusts the volume of the song while its playing but it doesn't seem to save it that way. I've changed the volume, cut the part that I want, pasted to where I want but it's still loud.

So we're ok up to here. What are you doing after adjusting the volume? Talk me through it step by step so that I can do the same as you.

So the volume is sitting at 0 db, then I drag it to -15 db and then I File - Save Project. I close the file and open it again, (its still sitting on -15 db. Then I copy and paste the first 2 seconds of the song and paste it into my project. The project volume is sitting at 0 db. When it plays the pasted part, its still loud

That's where it's going wrong.
The simplest way is to work in just one project rather than copy/paste between projects.
Does the track that you want to change the volume of come from a file that you have imported?
If so, open your real project, and import the file into that. (File menu > Import > Audio).
