High pitch sound

Starting this week, I too get a high pitched sound from my speakers when I hit the record button (with software playthrough checked), whether my Ion turntable is turned on or not. I do not get it when I listen to the turntable with a direct connection to my amplifier. The speakers are not loud enough to cause feedback thru the turntable cartridge. If I record with the turntable off, I hear the continuous (I am guessing it is in the 3000hz to 5000hz range) tone. If I play back what I have recorded (which is a flat line) I do not hear it. I also just unchecked the software playthrough box and again with the turntable turned off, I do NOT get the sound.

Topic split - there are several significant differences between your issue BuzzP and the issue in the previous topic, so it's simpler to deal with your issue separately.

What settings do you have in the Device Toolbar?
How is your turntable connected to the computer?
Are you still able to make reasonable quality recordings from the turntable?

Thanks for your response.

Device toolbar settings are: MME; Speakers (VIA High Definition); Microphone (USB Audio); 2(Stereo) Input.

The turntable is an ION TTUSB, it is connected to the computer through one of it's USP ports and also to my amplifier through a direct audio cable. The computer audio output (software playthrough) is connected to a another amp input.

I do not hear this tone on my recordings. But I hear it from my speaker about 1/2 second after I select "record" and it continues, even if I select pause, until I stop recording. The only changes to my software setup that I am aware of this past week is what ever Microsoft performed in the way of a Windows 7 update (I don't know if they even did.)

I am curious why this is a separate issue from the others in this thread?

Looking forward to your response.

PS: The more I learn about the capabilities of this software, the more I really appreciate the intelligence that went into its development.

There's a few possibilities, so let's try some tests to see if we can pin it down.

Disconnect the analogue cable from the turntable to the amp (take care that plugs do not touch anything metal - just wrap the plugs into a plastic bag while you test).

If the computer is a laptop (is it?) try disconnecting the power lead from the computer so that it is running on batteries.

Do you still get the high pitch sound when you record?

You're recording from a USB turntable, the other post was recording from a microphone (not necessarily a USB microphone). There are multiple possible causes for the problem in both cases so although the symptoms appear to be the same the causes and solutions may be completely different. If we're following one line of enquiry with you and a different line with the other user, but both in the same forum topic, then it can get very confusing. Generally we like to keep one problem in one topic.

Steve:

Well done. When I disconnect the audio leads to the amplifier, the tone is not present when I hit the record button. With the leads reconnected the tone is present when recording (both when the turntable is on and when it is off.) I have a desktop pc and the audio leads run about a foot from its Corsair TX750W power supply. I have an ASUS P7P55D-E-Pro mother board and use its on-board audio outputs. Again, this tone question only arose last week, and my hardware configuration (including wiring runs) didn't change; but I will leave the direct audio disconnected except when I want to listen to records and not record them.

Thanks again for your prompt assistance.
