Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Problems installing and to edit Mp3

Post by martuc » Wed Sep 21, 2011 10:01 am

Hello and thanks for a great program, I been using Audacity a long time but took a break from it yesterday i needed to edit some mp3 and it didn't work as I am use to.
I go to open file and select a mp3 the loading screen comes up and then there is like straight line (show no tunes) then a big distorsion and then a straight line. A well i thoud it was zoomed out, so i press play and the program freeze and i have to terminate it. So was thinking and maybe it was a old version i had so i download the new version but in the installetion siquence i get this error: An Error has occurred while trying to read the source file: *. audacity-win-unicode-1.3.13.tmp , and it say to ingnore is not to recomand. So i did anyway and i still get the same problem when i wanna play or Edit a mp3.

Pls help i really need to get this done by the end of the week. :?

I don't know what the problem is... Maybe there's something "funny" about this particular MP3 file.

But, I'll sugget a work-around... Try using a different program to decode your file to WAV (or maybe FLAC) before editing with Audacity. As long as you have installed LAME, you should be able to save-as MP3. For simple file conversion, I use XRECODE. (The link is for the older FREE version. XRECODE II is no longer free.)

As you may know, Audacity (and all "regular" audio editors) have to decode the MP3 before editing, and re-compress after editing, so there is no (additonal) harm by decoding to WAV first... It's just a bit of extra work and you'll loose your ID3 tags. (There are some special-purpose MP3 editing programs that can do some simple editing without decoding.)

Worse case, if you can't open or convert the file you may have to make an "analog" recording while playing the file (actually digital-to-analog-to-digital).
