Trim Tool Is Grayed Out

Post by Kismet1 » Wed Sep 21, 2011 3:38 am

I am a first time user and downloaded v1.3 as my PC runs Win7. I imported and MP3 with no problems and was able to select a start and end in the track that I want to save. When I go to Edit>Trim, the Trim tool is grayed out. I'd appreciate any help here. I checked the forums but didn't see this issue reported elsewhere. Thanks!

What were you hoping to achieve? At that instant I would have selected File > Export Selected and picked a music format for the exported file. The music file -- defaulting to Microsoft WAV -- would contain just the selected part of the show.

Hi Koz,

Thanks for responding although I am not sure I understand what you mean. I was simply trying to "cut" out the portion of the audio (narration) I wanted to keep. I was under the impression from the tutorial that when I selected the start and end point in the audio track I could do that. So after I had selected it, I attempted to "Trim" it as that's what the tutorial said to do but that option wasn't available.

I was expecting after I did this to then import a music track to mix in some intro music but I didn't get to that step and I am not sure how I would achieve that by following your suggestion below.

Does this clarify, as I am still unsure as to what I am doing wrong.

Thanks,

Marc

To make a selection, left click on the track and drag across the track while holding down the mouse button. You will see that the selected region is highlighted.
"Trim" should then be available.

For other ways to make a "selection", see here: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Audacity_Selection

Also most Edit menu items and all effects will be greyed out while recording, playing or paused.

Steve/Gale,

Thanks. The issue was as Gale had identified. Apparently I had the pause button on so it would not trim. Everything works per the tutorial as pertains to this so thanks. I have another question but will make a seperate post.

Thank you again for your help.

Many thanks for making that a separate post. This makes it easier for others who may want to search for your question in future.
