I'm not sure - he's not being very clear.
Was there any software with the microphone?
(I'm wondering what
"Built-in Enhanced sound effects processor, with extraordinary expressiveness" means and if there's any way to control (switch off) the "Enhanced sound effects processor".

You'll have to help me "see" what's happening....
Did we check your Audacity version? It should be 1.3.13 (unicode) - look in the "Help menu > About Audacity" to check.
Any your version of Windows is Vista?
With the microphone connected and your USB headphones disconnected, reboot the computer. When it has fully booted, open Audacity.
Go to: "Edit > Preferences > Devices". What options do you have for the "Recording" and "Playback" devices? Which options are currently selected?

Are there any other options available?
What if you change the "Host" setting?

Close Audacity, then plug in your USB headphones, wait a few moments for Windows to recognise the headphones, then restart Audacity.
What options do you now have?

Your "Headphones" is a "Headset"? (headphones and microphone combined?)
While we are testing this, do you have any "ordinary" headphones? (no microphone, with just a mini-jack plug connector)?
