dB levels past 0, sound distorted

In Windows 7 my turntable recording levels are way too high, with distortion coming through speakers.
Settings in Sound---microphone, speakers, etc---appear correct. What setting in Windows or
Audacity still could be incorrect?

It's possible a setting inside the turntable is incorrect. USB sound devices create a digital music stream inside the turntable and that's generally where the volume control is set. It's difficult to reset it later in the system.
You may have gotten a software package with the turntable that can perform adjustments. Consult your instructions.

Everything worked fine with the old Windows XP set-up.....................

Problem appears to be resolved---it was the gain level knob, which is now set on minus or zero. I wonder if this
is normal and if it affects the quality of the recording----hard to tell with old vinyl.
Anyway, thanks for your helpful suggestions.
