Exported files have no sound

Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Exported files have no sound
Hi i've finally started converting old cassette tapes of University guitar lessons into digital using an external tape to USB player. Everything is fine as far as getting audacity to record the contents of the tapes (ie the sound and waveforms are all there in Audacity) but when i export to itunes (in any of the formats - WAV, MP3 -I have Lame) there is no sound in the exported file that shows up in itunes. If anyone can help that'd be great.

Re: Exported files have no sound
What happens if you re-open the exported file in Audacity? Still OK?
Are you on a Mac? Open the file in QuickTime Player and try that. Are you listening on stereo headphones?

Re: Exported files have no sound
Thanks so much - the first link you sent Steve explained it- all i had to do was pull the usb plug out of my computer and the sound appeared in itunes - it explained how the sound will still appear in audacity but not in any other program while the usb port is in use.
Cheers.
Cheers.

Re: Exported files have no sound
This page from the manual should be helpful to you: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Reco ... turntables
The basic problem is that when you plug in a USB device Audacity and your operating system will target the output as well as the input onto your USB device. This is fine if you are using an external USB soundcard - but not if you are using a USB tapedeck or TT as these typically do not have speakers (or a DAC, Digital to Analog Converter, in the device).
So what you need to do is to target the output device to be your onboard soundcard (usually both in Audacity and sometime you may need to reset your O/S for this too - though in the later 1.3 Betas I no longer have to do this).
I will try to find some time to update the "Troubleshooting" section of that manual page (and the related Wiki page that you got a link for in an earlier post in this thread) to make this clearer.

Re: Exported files have no sound
Ok to make things in this respect a little clearer I have:
1) Updated the manual's tutorial on recording with USB devices to add the advice that for 1.3 Beta you can use the Device Toolbar to re-set the input and output device preferences. For now this is the alternative/secondary advice (but I suspect it should instead be recommended as the main way of doing this) - see "Set up Audacity to record from the turntable" in : http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Reco ... turntables
2) Added a section in the Wiki article on USB recording in its Troubleshooting section- see: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/USB_t ... _connected
3) Added a link from the Manual's page on USB recording in its Troubleshooting section to the Wiki Troubleshooting section in 2) above - see: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Reco ... turntables
4) Added an FAQ to the Manual on "No sound with USB ..." - see 3.1.3 in: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/FAQ
I hope that's a bit clearer - and thanks for the "nudge" on that Lesaw.
