Re: File has wav extension but Audacity says otherwise
Finally got it downloaded by using another browser. Now I have to try it out.

Windows Media Player 11 (running on XP) will happily play a misnamed file without complaining, but you can Right-click on the file in the playlist to check the Properties - note that the file is named "halley.wav" but WMP is using the MPEG Layer-3 Decoder:kozikowski wrote:Windows Media never used to do that, but it may now. You could also get Properties in Windows and sometimes that would tell you about the file.
A nice feature of the image-viewing software IrfanView is this warning message, with an offer to correct the problem:
That's probably more than we need or want Audacity to do, but it sure would be a nice feature for some other programs!
Re: File has wav extension but Audacity says otherwise
Are there any other programs you folks would recommend for me to get to help get started (on the right track) in editing audio and video (we haven't discussed video yet). I'm anxious to get together my "tool shed" and start to learn. How about sources of sounds? Any other forums I should join? Thank you........

There's a big and very active home recording forum here: http://homerecording.com/bbs/ (can be useful for picking up tips or just chatting about home recording things).
Also a good "trade magazine" about recording equipment and related stuff: http://www.soundonsound.com/ (this is a commercial site, but there's also a lot of free information. If you want the latest magazine issues you need to subscribe).
