File has wav extension but Audacity says otherwise

Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

QuickTime X ignores the file extension and correctly identifies the file as MPEG Layer 3, 1 channels, 8000 Hz.
And plays it.

Audacity 1.3.13 went for the FFMpeg libraries, couldn't find them, and opened and played the file anyway.

Quick Time - so THAT'S the name of the player that opens my wav files by default? There is no name on the little box that opens and closes when a file is called for. That's why I didn't know what the name of the app was. I thought it was a Windows 7 app. It played the file - but the sound didn't sound anything like it should have. It sounded a lot like static.

Thanks, also, for the name of MediaInfo. I've now installed it.

I watched the video a number of times and tried what I saw - but kept coming up with a video converter - not SUPER. I did note one thing though: The URL at the very beginning was not totally visible. Could that be my problem? I'll keep trying tonight - but it seems like it's sending me around in a circle. Thank you for making the video. I'm just failing at this task for some reason I don't know.

QuickTime is an Apple product. You can get QuickTime for Windows and it will allow Windows to play non-Microsoft audio and video files. Windows Media is the "official" Windows player, but it has a blind spot where Apple is concerned.

I believe both Windows and Apple now have "Preview" programs which allow you to tell what you have without opening up the full application. QuickTime Player will easily give you technical details of your work by opening up the INFO panel.

Windows Media never used to do that, but it may now. You could also get Properties in Windows and sometimes that would tell you about the file.

MPEG Layer 3 is the full family name of MP3.

Thank you for that information. Knowing that, I now know that it's Windows Player that I'm dealing with. As far as downloading SUPER, I got to the point where I could download it - but a message said not to use a download manager. I started the download - then went outside to do some work. Came back and the download indicator disappeared and there is no file where the setup program was supposed to be saved. Can someone help me here? If IE9 is using a download manager, I don't know because I never gave it a second thought. Can it be disabled while I download SUPER? Geeeez - I've never had a problem so vexing while trying to download anything.

Sometimes you can right-click on a file and the system will volunteer to download it without any other programs.
