I recently downloaded Audacity's Beta version 1.3 for Windows 7 (I have a 64 bit OS version running on bare-bones minimums) and followed every single tutorial I could find to record sound from my PC.

Mostly, I am a machinima artist specializing in World of Warcraft content. I am trying to record a sound from the game, however, Audacity is proving to be incredibly tricky. Allow me to demonstrate:



On videos in Youtube instructing me how to turn it on, I've seen other peoples' respond to whatever is playing in the background, however, mine does not. (I mean the sound indicator bars next to the device, respectively)



Now, as you can see here, I have stereo mix enabled, and selected. The first dropdown's got me a bit confused, obviously (MME?) but the rest of it I've fiddled with, and played with, and still nothing. I have all the plug-ins, the LAME, and everything else I need. I used to use Audacity years ago when I had XP as my OS, but now, as you see, it's Windows 7.

All my sound cards are up to date as far as I know. Audacity can record my mic just fine, however, it refuses to take in sound from my PC itself, directly.

It's pretty odd that you can select Stereo Mix and still nothing happens. That light-gray column to the right of each device is a sound meter, right? Does your Stereo Mix bounce when you experience sound?

It makes no movements what-so-ever. It's rather frustrating.

You shouldn't have two "default" recording devices. In fact I'm surprised that Windows would allow you to do that.

So am I. Any ideas as to what might be going on?

No, that's correct. The "Default Communication Device" for playback and recording is the device that Windows uses by default for phone (VoIP) and unified communication. "The "Default Device" is the device for playback and recording that Windows uses by default for multimedia communication.

Are you playing the sound you want to record on the Realtek device? If not, you can't record it with the Realtek stereo mix device (except possibly by going through various hoops).

If the sound playing through the Realtek is muted or low level, then you can't record it either (you could on XP).

That's not to say you can't do it, you just may not be able to do it with Windows built-in services (any more).
